Lillian Axe

Lillian Axe, like many metal bands, was originally a glam band. But as the days of glam fell away, the music of Lillian Axe was strong enough to keep the band viable. I only have one of their albums, Psychoschizophrenia, but it's excellent. The band is led by guitarist Stevie Blaze, who writes all the music and lyrics. Unfortunately, the band is currently on hiatus as the members all pursue solo projects. I hope they do get back together, as their latest album was clearly their best effort.

Psychoschizophrenia('93) ****
Just about everyone I know likes this album, metal fans or not. It has plenty of melody and catchy parts, but it's also complex enough to hold the interest of a real music fan. It's got a couple soft ballads, but also enough heavy ones balance them out. Stevie Blaze includes a section in the liner notes in which he describes the inspiration and meaning behind each song. He writes some interesting lyrics, matching his guitarwork. Too bad so few people have heard about this band. I saw them play most of these songs live at a small club a little while back, and they were pretty cool. They played some new ones too, which showed a lot of potential, but they're yet to be released.
