Iced Earth. When I first heard these guys,
I was a little doubtful
because they were heavier than anything I'd really been
into before. But now I've realized that they're really an excellent band.
These brothers-in-rock of Blind Guardian hail from Florida, and aren't really
similar to Blind Guardian at all. They've got driving yet complex rhythms,
pounding drums melded with ethereal keyboards, and vocals that are growling,
screeching, and melodic. Rhythm guitarist Jon Schaffer does most of the
music writing and all of the lyrics. They've had three singers in four
albums, getting better each time.
They've been labeled power metal, progressive metal,
and even Euro-metal, but the truth is, there isn't too much around like them.
They've been compared to Iron Maiden, Metallica, early Queensryche, or
Sabbat, but only take elements from those bands, sounding nothing like any of
them. As influences, the band themselves lists Kiss, Black Sabbath,
Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Judas Priest and Metallica. Iced Earth
clearly is not for the faint of heart. But if you're a classic metal fan,
be sure to check them out.
